I collect postcards. I am an artist. This blog showcases both hobbies.

golden fall

I am linking up to Inspiration Avenue to showcase a favorite season...autumn.

Recently, I drove through the Central Valley of California, seeing the strikingly near-empty reservoirs, a herd of tule elk (a real treat, msgnificent creatures that were once thought to be extinct), and some promising clouds to sprinkle the farms and dry, abandoned dirt.

We passed a large vineyard, the leaves turned yellow in November, shining gold in the dusky sun. The clouds had silver linings, and the rolling desert foothills had lots of shadows, light, and texture only dry barren hills can have. I HAD to paint it, but I was obviously not at home next to a canvas.

So I drew the scene on scrap paper with my son's crayons.

Then, I got home and realized I had an overdue handmade postcard swap, so I decided to use watercolor pencil and markere to recreate the scene yet again. (Sorry it is upside down).

And lastly, I got a how-to collage book in the mail today and was inspired after a collage hiatus.  So I did a mixed media collage with acrylics, papers, dryer sheets, cedar needles, twine.

aspen

Ive become obsessed with making aspens, so I made a small series of aspen postcards. I find making them very therapeutic and I like to gaze at the finished product...so pretty!

I would add captions if things would cooperate so... 1. Yes, its not a painting or an aspen. It is a pillow I bought because it helped inspire me. 2. Midway through painting, my backdrops are done. 3. Now the birch trunis are in, now time to add foreground leaves and then I am done.

autumn colors

I have a bucket list, which mostly contains natural events...such as the one I have checked off (Texas Bluebonnets) and another, the fall colors in the Northeast. But alas, for now I must settle for the fall colors at home.

In the valley below me, leaves usually die from drought and heat before they can even lose their chlorophyll.

But up at 5,000 feet, even Southern California can have a splash of autumn colors so here are some photos of pink and yellow dogwoods, black oak with yellow and brown leaves, fallen big leaf maple leaves, poisin ivy (stay away!) And the twisty rootd of live oak. Enjoy! And head on over to http://inspiration-avenue-team.blogspot.com to enjoy more of autumn.

painting.....autumn is here

I live where fall peeks through, the oaks turn a bit yellow and the rare dogwood turns a pinky red...but with many evergreens and odd weather, things can turn brown, simply brown...and nearby, where the seasons are hot and dry constantly, trees turn brown from dying in the heat while also flowering....

My point here as I ramble is that I love autumn colors. I dream of some day seeing the fall colors in, say, New Hampshire. Until then, I look at pretty images online and yearn to buy paintings of the pretty scenes. I never buy them though, because I tell myself, "I can paint that". Except, I never do. Until now. I decided to just go for it and....voila...it worked out. Lately, my artistic talent has been failing me but I channeled my abilities.

I have often looked at illuminated paintings, as in the ones with a warm sunny or moonlit glow, and sigh because I have never figured out how to make things "glow" with paint. But I somehow, after a lifetime or trying, mastered it. So without further ado, my Aspens Aglow.

book

I have tons of goals this year. One is to finish my altered book that is book art to the lyrics of 46 and 2 by Tool. Here are some pages (without lyrics..yet...just got my printer working again). I am linking up to inspiration avenue as...another one of my goals is to do more art and inspiration avenue helps me along with their weekly link ups. Check them out at http://inspiration-avenue-team.blogspot.com Those first three were ones I did in .... the past week, the other pages I did earlier this year which are more complete are the final three. Enjoy!

summer's bounty

Where I live, summer can mean months between rains, with hundred degree heat nearby but a nice eighty-five at home... but summer lacks the vibrant greens of elsewhere, everything turns brown or even a sun-scorched black hue. My garden battles crazy mountain weather, I am lucky to get more than a handful of strawberries and tomatoes. Nevertheless, I like summer at home. So here is a photo that shows the dry plants and, be frightened, cob webs. We have plenty of black widows which I spray weekly to try and eradicate. One day, I went to rid of an abandoned web and just HAD to have a photo shoot. I got out a spray bottle and sprayed the web which sat behind some dried weeds. I like the result.
